Has a new ailment or 2 going on. Many of us have been dealing with this in the last couple weeks.
Zack will be 14 in May. Overall health pretty good, his issues have manly been his ED and having to have had both Knees operated on before he was 1 1/2. His knees have done very well, every now and then he will tweak one or one of the elbows. But petting him the other day, I noticed a crusty area and was amazed that I didn't notice it sooner. He had a 2 inch round sore on his side mid way between shoulders and end of the rib cage, that is oozing and has the most awful odor. I cleaned the area and flushed with peroxide and checked for other areas. Found a second area that he used to have a fatty lipoma and that had opened up, so clean that also. Off to the vet yesterday to have the area checked out. Not so good news, it is a mass cell tumor (cancerous), but with his age and all, not a lot can be done. The vet took him in the backed shaved the areas and cleaned them, put powder on the area and said to clean daily, use the powder and he wished there was more we could do.
We know that he is getting up there in age and feel so fortunate that he is still active and alert. So for now, we are cleaning and powdering the areas daily, making sure that he has everything he wants, even the extra biscuit or scrambling him an egg. Saying some prayers and hoping we have him by our side for many more months.
So, Hug your fur babies and be thankful for the time we do have with them. And a few prayers our way would help!
The tumor has gotten progressively worse, so call my regular vet, who was on vacation when we originally took Zack in to be check, and discuss all that was going on.
He wanted to see the tumor, It has been oozing more and more and is ulcerating. He suggested they draw some blood, check Zack levels and get that off of him. He said it is infected and He also put Zack on a antibiotic and after 2 doses, Zack is more perky than the last couple of weeks. Wasn't sure just looking at it that it was cancerous, so we are taking it one day at a time till we know for sure. Blood work showed BUN/creatine levels borderline. On Monday, they are removing the tumor, but will also have Zack on IV's due to the levels. Please, keep Zack in your prayers that at the end of all this, that it is not cancerous. But one thing I know, He has that Spark back and we hope to keep it there for a long time to come.
