Thought you all would be interested in a conversation I had with my middle sister this week. We were chatting about a variety of topics, but dogs came up. So the conversation goes:
Sister - "A friend of Nana's (her MIL) had to give up his lab, purebred with papers etc. He had to return her (the dog) to the breeder. Now the breeder is looking for a new home."
Me - "Really what kind?"
Sister - "a female silver lab. Apparently this guy paid $2,500 because she is a rare silver. I don't want to hear any lectures about silver labs, like you gave me the last time."
Note: my sister & I had a prior conversation about silver labs & I guess I went a bit overboard in trying to explain that they are not true labs, they are mixed with Wiems.
Me - "*biting my tongue* Fine, so what about this lab, you say the breeder is looking for a new home for her."
Sister - "yes, but whoever takes her has to agree she can be bred at least one time. Nana thought you might want her."
Me - "Nope, not interested for a couple of reasons.
1) not financially in a position to afford the costs of a second dog.
2) if I get a second permanent one, I can't continue to foster, my house is not big enough for 3.
3) the biggest reason, I would not agree to allow her to bred. I am involved in rescue & allowing this breeder to breed her & continue a lineage that is NOT true to the AKC Labrador Retriever Standard."

I hope the Lab mix finds a good home.
I still can't get my mind around $2,500 for a mutt!

Silver labs seem to be popping up everywhere.

"Jack catching a few rays."
I have a co-worker that has a "very rare red lab (fox red)" that she bought for about $2000. He weighs 120 pounds, and is not overweight. I told her that he didn't meet the breed standard, and that a lab shouldn't cost $2000. She said, "but he is a rare color, and really big so he is worth more" . . . whatever. A couple of years ago she was going to buy a silver lab from the same breeder. She said, "Since I already have one rare color, I'd like to have another rare color." I explained it again, and luckily she didn't buy the silver lab; but I don't have any confidence that she really gets it.

Some people are like slinkies. Not really good for much, but bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.
What boggles my mind is that people pay that money and then the dog goes back for breeding... and makes them more money.
Its a good gig if you can get it. (Breeder)
