    Defaultolder dog and surgery

My Cooper baby is having surgery Monday to have growth on corner of eye removed. I'm scared to death because of his age. He is 9 1/2. Has anyone else had older dog be put under and they are ok? Am I risking his life putting him thru surgery? I'm a worrier and probably thinking too much into this.

My boy Jasper had TPLO surgery at 10 years old. The vet wouldn't operate without a health check so I wouldn't worry too much.

My previous Lab was neutered at 11 years old too !

Providing his health is fine from your point of view as well then I would't worry too much.

Good thoughts from here for the surgery.

Cooper is very healthy. Thanks you so much. Makes me feel alot better. I'm sure he will be fine and sure vet wouldnt put him under if he thought something would happen.

Discuss your anesthesia options with your vet. These days they can put them under quickly, do the necessary surgery and wake them right back up. I had a growth removed from a 13 year old and she was fine and lived to be 16½. As Colin said, make sure you have the blood work done before hand. It's not cheap, but it could warn you of any health issues you might not be aware of. I have it done on any dog of mine after the age of 8 which is having surgery. Good luck.

My Bear girl had the exact same thing done when
she was that age. The vet used the "quick acting"
anesthesia and she did awesome !

My Gin had emergency surgery when she was 10 years old - they ended up removing 1 ft of her large intestine. Because it was an emergency, they didn't have time to do proper bloodwork, etc. - she would have died if they didn't operate. She came through with flying colours. She also then had her teeth cleaned when she was 13 years old which entailed her having to have anesthesia - she also came through that with flying colours. She's now 15 years old and still going strong! I certainly wouldn't worry too much -- if your vet feels that your pup can handle the anesthesia and they've done the necessary pre-op examination / bloodwork, then Cooper should be fine.

We had a senior spayed at 8 1/2 and one with a tumor removed about a year and a half later. They were fine.

Coopers surgery went fine, they removed the growth on outside corner of eye and also one on the lower inside lid. Only problem was bad diarhea Coop has and still has. They say it's probably the stress sent me home with meds for it. What a night we had, the diarhea just runs out him and he looks so miserable. Hoping today he feels better and diarhea is gone.
