DefaultLepto Vaccine For Those In the Vancouver B.C. Area?

We are planning a trip to the Vancouver/Fraser Valley area in a couple of months and thinking of taking Dee with us. I know there is a few of you that live in that area and I wondered if lepto is an issue at all. My vet no longer vaccinates for it as it's not a problem where we are, but I'm wondering if it is in Vancouver and the outskirt areas. I talked to my vet about it and he didn't seem to think it would be necessary to vaccinate before we go......but just thought I'd check it out here as well.

    TIA

I didn't vaccinate the three I took out there last year.

Thanks for responding Laura. Any idea if they vaccinate their dogs for lepto? We're actually planning to stay in the Langley and Abbotsford area. We don't plan on doing a lot of walking.....just a few days visit. She will likely just be in in my friends house and only outside to go to the bathroom, but I don't want to take any chances.

I guess the Vancouver area people (I know there are at least a few on here) haven't been on JL yet this weekend or didn't see this. Would really appreciate your responses. Thanks.

I am in Oregon and we vaccinate for it. We have it here, and I would think it entirely possible they have it there. We had sea lions die from it not long ago. If you can keep away from water there wouldn't be a worry. But you know labbies, they could find a puddle in the Sahara! I would vaccinate for it if it were me, just to be safe.

I'm in the Seattle area and we don't vaccinate Bella for lepto. Our vet first recommended it a couple years ago, but not strongly. We opted to skip it. (Bella's been going into creeks around here for almost 11 years and never had any issues. She doesn't get into stagnant water very much though.)

From what you are describing for your expectations, I really don't think you'd need it.

The water doesn't have to be stagnant. It can be anywhere. The sea lions got it from the ocean. I found a couple of links. Helping YOUR Pets Live Well!: Oregon Coast Sees Rise in Leptospirosis Deaths: Protect Your Dogs and Family Canine leptospirosis in Canada: a veterinarian's perspective

I don't plan on going near any water. The farthest she'll be going is a few minutes in their yard when she needs to go out.... or possibly to stop for a quick pee break on route. Lepto vaccine isn't without risk either, so I'd want to know that it was definitely necessary. If it is then I'll have to weigh up whether to take her or not.

Still hoping that someone who lives in the area will reply.

Thanks for your replies so far.

Thanks Cam. I was hoping someone close to there would reply. Do you think it would be necessary in the Abbotsford area?

I gave Lepto to Abbey when she was younger (I didn't really know any better) and she had a pretty bad reaction. I guess a lot of people are of the opinion "better safe than sorry," but I probably wouldn't and would just keep her out of dog parks and things like that.
