DefaultPaddy's 16th Heavenly Birthday today (LONG STORY)

The Noble would have been 16 years old today. He left us at 12. I haven't posted his story in a few years so I thought today would be an appropriate time to do so. Apologies to those who have read this more than a few times. He's a busy boy up there now, with so many of his family to look after.

    How Paddy Got His Name

Once upon a time there was a man and a woman who lived with two cats named Lewis and Clark. The man talked often about the only dog he ever had, a yellow lab named Paddy. From time to time the woman would say, "Wouldn't it be nice to have a dog? I'd really like to have a dog." The man's usual response was, "Yes it would be nice. I'd love to have a dog, too. But we have no fenced yard. Our house is so small." "OK, you are probably right," the woman would say, thinking to herself "so what, we'll work around that." And three weeks later the conversation would take place again.

This went on for two years. In November of the second "I want a dog" year the man became severely depressed. Nothing the woman or friends did could snap him out of his funk. They slowly realized that the man's Novembers were ALWAYS like that. That DOES IT, thought the woman. I'm getting a Lab. No more black Novembers! (The woman was not known for her highly scientific reasoning.) The woman picked up the newspaper and the gods that be steered her to the pet section of the classifieds. Hmmmm. Labrador Retrievers. But we have no fenced yard and our house is so small. The woman called several of her friends, her support group. Should I or shouldn't I? Should I or shouldn't I? She made a decision. She called Ruth. "C'mon, Ruth. We're going on a puppy caper!" The man was at his studio and, of course was NOT consulted.

The woman lugged the picnic basket out of the closet, lined it with the man's pillowcase and a t-shirt, waited for Ruth to arrive and then off they set for the country. Heh heh, thought the woman. What a caper! Upon arriving at the breeder's terrific place, the woman and Ruth saw the most beautiful dogs they had ever seen. And puppies frolicking EVERYWHERE! The woman saw a little female off by herself and it tugged on her heart. "Oh, look, Ruthie. Look at this little shy baby. How about this one?", asked the woman. "Well, she's very sweet. But let's not rush. Let's look at some of these others and see how they interact." Whereupon Ruth gave the woman a quick how-to-pick-a-puppy lesson. Eventually, Ruth helped the woman settle on a magnificent pale yellow male.

After a final bath and shots, the woman and Ruth began their way back to the studio with this incredibly tiny puppy held in the woman's lap. The puppy slept peacefully the entire drive back (one hour). In the car, when they got to the studio, the woman placed the puppy in the picnic basket and snuck around to the rear entrance. The friend Ruth went in the front door and handed the man a "hope things look brighter soon" kind of card with lab puppies on the front and a handwritten note inside that only a puppy could have scrawled. The woman joined the man and Ruth at the work table and the man said, "Oh, you girls are so thoughtful to try to cheer me up. It's very sweet. Thanks." SILENCE. LONG PAUSE. "Well, DON'T YOU WANT TO MEET HIM???" asked Ruth. "Wha? Wha? What do you mean?" said the man. "Come here." said the woman and she led him to the picnic basket at the rear of the studio. "What's that doing here?" asked the man. "Go on, open it!" said the woman.

And he did. And there, sitting perfectly upright, was the amazingly beautiful..................

"PADDY!!!!" the man gasped, and tears of joy ran down his cheeks.

And that is how Paddy got his name.

    The End

Happy Birthday Paddy! That's a wonderful story Nance! I hope Paddy did chase away Tud's Black Novembers for a while.
