    DefaultCounter Surfing

Any advnice on how to stop this behavior? Our 6 month old is so sneaky...the second I turn my back or leave the room he is up on the table and has confiscated my kids dinner. I've been putting him outside or in his crate during their meals lately but this seems like a bandaid to the problem.

Putting your dog in the crate to avoid dinner being stolen off the table is a good idea if nothing else works. Some dogs are just counter surfers especially when no one is watching.

I tried this with my cats to keep them off the kitchen counters and it did work. I never thought to try it with a dog. Maxx will every once in a while jump up but only the very front of his toes actually touch the counter. I think I will try this to curb the problem completely.

Tried the baking sheet that flipped a can of stones. The last one I thought I had him, but sadly I failed. I read noise will frighten them. I hid and as he went to get up banged 2 pot lids together. I kept it up for 3-4 days and thought I cured him. A miracle.

Showed off to a friend. As I stood behind a door she watched him steal out lunch. Next time I was on the floor with my lids and felt whiskers...What are we looking at Mum.
On it went with my pot lid orchestra and him shouting bravo until I gave up.

Only thing to do is never leave anything on the counters. With a young one I would try frightening them. Erns taught Tessa and I banged a rolled up newspaper on the wall. She took off and hasn't done it since. Seeing the surfer king, it wont be long before she has another go.

Sophie has been know to counter surf. She has gotten so much better now that she's over a year old. We just would scold her and tell her "down" and tell her shame on you Sophie! I have heard that people buy clear plastic carpet runners with the little pointy things that hold it to the rug. Turn it upside down and the pokey things are a deterent from the surfing...it kind of hurts their feet.

I love the can monster idea, but doubt that it works for Labs.

I'm sure it's a hoot to witness, but I'd be concerned about it creating some noise fear too. It sort of depends on a dog being sensitive enough to dislike the sound enough to not go after the meat the next time. An insensitive dog will keep trying. A sensitive dog may develop a fear.

Teach him to lay in one spot while you eat, the threshold of the dining room door. He's not allowed past that point. We taught ours "out of the kitchen" and now we don't have to worry about it.

This is how we taught them and don't think we were being mean either, we didn't touch them. We took a rolled up newspaper and when they would jump up, we would slam that thing on the counter right in front of their nose. The loud smacking noise plus us loudly saying "off" did the trick. That worked for every piece of furniture we did not want them on. It only took a couple times.

Now, I could be lucky that it worked for mine. But it's worth a try.
