    - Terrierman's Daily Dose -

I do not treat for heartworm, I test every 6 months and have never met someone who has had a confirmed case of heartworm.

    Have you?

I knew of one in a shelter. But I'm pretty sure he came up from Louisiana with it.

I test yearly and do a few rounds of black walnut treatment through the summer/fall months.

Yup, many around here; especially in the heavily wooded areas. Here in town, not so much, but from where Jobe came from (Oakley, MI), he was heartworm positive when I adopted him.

Mom to Indy 6/12/98 to 11/16/11 (always in my heart), and Jobe 8-14-2000 to 6/24/2013 (Working TDI) English Labs, and Annie our Golden Retriever (TDI), and Kodiak (who will one day hopefully be a TDI dog if he doesn't kill me first).

Interesting article. I do give my dogs heartworm meds. My only problem is why do they need to be tested yearly if they are on the meds year round?

I do know of 3 dogs that had heartworms, one died from them the other two survived from treatments.

According to the article and this, the medication is just as effective every 3 months as every month. About 95%.

I also do not treat and do twice yearly testing. Many, many years ago my brother had a dog that died after an advanced case of hearworms was discovered in his dog. He lived in FL at the time. I have never known anyone in the area I live in to have a dog with heartworms. I still hold my breath while waiting for the results of the blood draw...

I have met two local (ottawa) dogs that tested positive. Ok well the second I didn't meet but my vet was treating the dog (dog born and raised locally).

I do plan to research if you need to give it every 30 days. If I can extend to 45 and still be safe I much prefer that.

I know that there are shelters out there were the dogs are highly likely to be HW positive.

You've met me. My Jessie had heartworm, confirmed, back in 1981. It was God awful and the treatment almost killed her. I use Ivomec every 45 days, 12 months out of the year. I don't ever want to go through that again.

Sometimes meds fail. You don't have to test. It's like playing Russian Roulette with your dog's life though, so testing is up to you.

The life cycle of the microfilaria is 60 days. My vet told me that giving the heartworm preventative every 45 days is preferred. He said he wouldn't go longer than that, but the reason the heartworm preventative companies say every 30 days is that it's easier for the majority of people to remember to give it on the first of the month. If you do every 45 days, you have to mark your calendar and check to make sure you do it on time.

I draw hearts on my wall calender for the 45 days so I will not forget.
