DefaultNLR - Flat Coat Retriever question.

Neighbor rescued a 6 month old Lab/Golden mix two days ago. She brought her over to see Hershey and me and asked me what I thought. I told her she certaainly could be a Lab/Golden mix, but looked like a Flat Coat to me. A breed she never heard of. I am guessing the mix she was told could certainly look like this dog. Then I told her that I thought the dog was older, maybe 9-12 months. For what it is worth, she had the dog to the vet the next day, and the vet told her she had a 9-12 month old Flat Coat. Not sure in my mind what she is, but she is a nice dog.

My question is, and I think someone on the forum raises Flat Coats, should they be expected to be basicaly a black Golden as far as behavior, grooming, training, etc. I previously had a Golden, and Hershey is cared for very much the same way. Very much the same dog except Labs are broader, have shorter hair and shed more.

I don't have Flatcoats, but know a couple of people who do. They look more like a black Lab/Setter cross than a Lab/Golden. Actually, they look more like a black Irish Setter, at least to me. As far as training, etc, I've been hearing from Flatcoat people that they are mentaly very slow to mature.

Agree with MM on the Flattie appearance... tending to Irish Setter. I love the look of Flatties.

Hmmm... Can you post a picture?

The heads of a Flatty are more like my Nola's a bit more planed than a golden.

And they're goofy and immature, eternally LOL

We train with a girl who has two flat coats. They look just like the last picture Melissa posted. Her two are still "silly" as she says. She brushes them alot. Very good with obedience. Both of hers are unsure when stopping in the water. They don't seem to be as comfortable in the water as the labs. They are beautiful dogs with great personalities.

My niece has a Lab/Irish setter cross. Totally black. Looks like the photos of the flat coats above except short lab length hair. What an out and out fetching machine she is.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone. Looks like Dora is a Lab/Golden mix. My neighbor managed to track her back to a shelter in OK through her rabies tag. She is just over 9 months old. Neighbor was actually able to find the owner of the Golden that had her. Unintended breeding, the owners of the Golden kept the pups through 8 weeks and then surrendered them. Five were Golden coloring, and Dora was the only black one. The others were adopted quickly, but Dora was at the shelter for 7 months. She was just recently transported here with a dozen other black dogs. I wish I undestood why there is such a bias against black dogs. At least this one finally found a good home.

A friend has 4 flat coat retrievers. They look just like the pic above. Adorable dogs and well trained as they do obedience. They are very much like Labs and love people. Very friendly dogs.

I mind a 18 month old one a couple of days a week and he is is full on.lolol. Guess he will mature and settle one day.
