    DefaultJack does bark

We had not heard Jack bark since getting him. He would grunt a little......and sigh when he lays down....but no barking. I was getting worried that someone had done something to his vocal cords. Tonight my son took him in the backyard to go potty, and I heard barking. I thought it was our neighbor's dog (they have a lab mix). Then I realized it was Jack as dh and I took off running to the backyard. He had something cornered under dh's work shed. We got him inside and dh went back out with a flashlight. It was an opossum! Now every time Jack's gone out since - he checks for that nasty opossum. At least we know he can bark, he has just chosen not to.

Our Maggie (12 yr old we lost last May) used to tree opposums in our back yard. They have some major teeth! I mean long, sharp, scary teeth! Sophie had an adventure with an opposum too...she chased it into our pool...well that's another story! Anyway, we try to keep our dogs away from them cuz, wow! They have a nasty set of teeth!

Selective barking! That's awesome. Diesel barks all.the.time! Someone gets into/out of their car 10 houses away, he barks. A leaf hits the pavement, he barks. He doesn't make a peep when I am out - according to my neighbours. When I come home sometimes I purposely rattle the garbage can outside & he doesn't make a sound. He never barked at all when we lived in an apartment. When he first started doing it I thought it was cute, especially when I found out he only does it when I'm home, like he's protective or something. Now, it's just bloody annoying and a hard habit to break him of!

My black lab never barked, he had an occasional Light "Harf". Then when we got Newt, Newt Taught him how to bark, now our black lab barks all the time. It was 4 yrs of silence till Newt came alone

Reminds me of the joke about the boy who never spoke a word until he was 10, then suddenly one morning said "My oatmeal is cold". Worried parents said "You can talk! Why haven't you said anything before?" Boy said "until now, everything was OK."
Maybe Jack just never encountered anything barkworthy.

    Ha! Love this.

When we brought Dozer home from the shelter, he didn't bark either. Then one day I had to put him in his kennel and he started barking up a storm. I remember just standing there thinking "oh, so that's what his voice sounds like!"

Misha never barks, I don´t even know how she barks. In her 4 years I´ve probably heard her bark 3 or times. I LOVE NON BARKING DOGS

With Labs I have found that either they never bark, or you can get a barkador (a Lab that LOVES to bark his head off out of excitement).

Homer is a selective barker, only when it does deserve it he´ll bark.

And Vermont, being a Collie is a natural barker. And I being a noise hater, am a natural "shut upper" everytime he makes noise for stupid reasons.
