    DefaultFirst Night at Puppy Preschool

Harper had his first night of puppy preschool tonight. He had a bit of a tentative start, sitting under my chair while all the other puppies were playing and getting to know one another. There was another Lab, a little black one called Jet, he is 3 weeks younger than Harper. There was also a boxer pup who was the cutest little thing, all legs!

But then Harper SHONE! Out came the cabanossi and he was all over it! He responded to "come", he sat, layed down and stood with hand gestures only, and eventually he found another puppy to play with - a little Cocker called Basil who was very placid. He also investigated the vet facility and helped himself to the practice cat's food and water, then started on the bowls! All in all it was a very fun night.

Here's one thing that I found weird - my dog was the only dog to wee and poo at all. Is this a sign of house training, or is it something else?

Sounds like Harper did well once he got used to the scene (with the possible exception of the toileting issues...)

    cute! Harper sounds super smart.

He probably wee'd and poo'd from the excitement of being in his surroundings. Did you feed him dinner and give him a drink before you went to school?

I was thinking the same thing as Sarah, he was probably a bit excited, and if you fed him or gave him water before hand he maybe just had to go!

Sounds like Harper did well once he got comfortable!

Yeah, they actually told us to feed him at 6 and the class was at 7, so I was thinking the same thing. I might feed him at 5 and take him out for a toilet at 5.30 and if he does a poo then I'll know he's empty. All trial and error I guess.

And they gave him a drink during class. He peed about 5 minutes later, so that's why that happened - I was just flustered last night and didn't put 2 and 2 together.

Because he's big but gentle they put him in the "little" class with the small puppies! In the other group are a gorgeous Newfie and a Deerhound that Harper could walk under, even though it's only 10 weeks old.

    I just love puppies!!!!

    Aww I loved puppy class!

When I take Abbey to class I don't feed her until after we come home - she's more intent on being good for food if she's hungry

I've been to many classes with adult dogs and usually somebody poops. Don't worry about it.

we went to see the world dog games at Homebush Katie and during the agility one of the little poodle competitors stopped and poo'ed right in the middle of the arena!! So just think, it could have been worse

LOL, Sarah, that's HILARIOUS! I just laughed so loud! I wish I'd gone to the games now, only it was a touch expensive.

Justine, I think it's a good idea not to feed Harper until we get home. He still gets most of his meals (all bar breakfast) in a Kong anyway, so it's easy to wait until after.

Thanks, Sharon, I won't worry too much about it. The only person who really minded was the little boy he pooed right in front of!! But then the vet nurse used it as an example of a dog that is fed in the right way because his poo was solid and she just picked it up with a paper towel and wiped down the floor with disinfectant.
