    DefaultSophie got SKUNKED!!!!

My husband took her out for a night walk and she broke the leather loop on her chain leash to chase after a skunk! We immediatly got her in the shower and scrubbed her with vinegar and the rest of her doggie shampoo and some of my shampoo. I think she's smelling better, unless my nose is getting used to it. It seems like her nose has it the most and it's hard to scrub her nose. Sigh.....my last dog got skunked 4 times before she figured out not to chase the cats with the white stripe! I think I will try lemon juice on a wash cloth.....any ideas?

Thanks for the help...I am worried about getting it off her face. We did a pretty good job on her body. I used a wet rag with lemon juice and baking soda, but I think she needs a good soaking and I don't want to get it in her eyes. Any advice?

We don't have skunks here, but a friend in the US tells me when her dog gets skunked she used tomato. Hope someone gives you some helpful ideas.

That was my thought at first Chris but I searched and found a post by Bob Pr that said some people found it ineffective !

A groomer friend told me to use Dawn dish detergent. It works, and I imagine any brand would also work. It cuts the smelly oils.
I noticed a skunky smell at my house this morning, and have been wondering about what I'd do if my cat got skunked.

I had a dog that got skunked all the time and tried all the goofy suggestions, including tomato juice. When Cinder got skunked I did a JL search. I used the recipe I found here and it was, by far, the best results I ever had. You use baking soda (that's the arm and hammer one, right), hydrogen peroxide and dawn. Use this mix. Repeat if necessary. Cinder really got blasted so I washed her twice. I'm sure you'll find the amounts if you do a search.

    Good luck.

    Edited to add:

    Recipe #1
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
    1/4 cup of baking soda
    1 teaspoon of liquid soap

    Recipe #2
    1 pint 3% hydrogen peroxide
    2/3 cup baking soda
    1 tablespoon liquid soap
Mix this up at the time of use (the mixture must be fresh to work properly). Pour or sponge it on dog. Knead it well into his coat. Be careful to keep the formula out if the dog's eyes, nose and mouth; you can use a sponge to carefully wipe it onto his/her face. Let it sit five minutes then rinse with plain water. Becareful not to get it in the dogs eyes. Cover them with a wash cloth if needed. If a second dose is needed mix a new batch from scratch. The mixture reacts with the chemicals in the skunk spray and oxidizes them. If the mixture is not fresh, the reaction will not work.

    Do Not Store leftover shampoo.

Deidra!!! LOL. I swear that's what my lab/beagle mix thought. When he got skunked he would do it a couple times within a week.
