Snake bit ...
Monday morning when we were hunting from Carol's blind, Remi was after something next to a 12' Jon boat I have turned upside down and leaning against the back of the blind. We didn't notice it until home washing the dawgs off after the hunt that she had a slightly swoolen and red left eye.
I checked inside the eye thoroughly, didn't see anything but rinsed it out with an antispetic eye wash. I noticed three small punture-like holes and a scrape. Two above the eye, one near the outside corner and the scrape below that. I coated them with an antiseptic ointment after checking to make sure there weren't splinters or anything inside them.
By yesterday morning it really wasnt improving so I started her on a 1/2 capsule (approx 250 mg) of amoxycilin, a general anti-bacterial antibiotic. We hunted again this morning and her eye worsened. The swelling and redness increased. We gave her three 25 mg benadryl and headed for the vet's office 35 miles away.
He examined the punctures closely and said it was a very large spider, several wasps or a double water snake strike. We discounted the wasps since we've not seen any there all year and non Monday when they would have been stirring if she had gotten into them. Vet thought not likely a spider bite because of the wide spacing of the holes. That left the snake strike as the likeliest possibility and would also explain the relatively slow swelling and reddening process since it is not a venomous snake, just one with bacteria laden saliva.
She's on Prednisone (I hate that stuff), and two antibiotics including an eye ointment to minimize infection in the eye itself. I also have to continue the 3 ea 25 mg of Benadryl 2X/day for the next 3 days.
*Deep sigh* ... this dawg is the proverbial knucklehead that always gets into trouble. But we love her.
Also this morning ...
Awwwww...poor Remi! So glad it was not poisonous but still looks extremely painful. Sending lots of get well thoughts her way.
Awwww....Poor Remi! Best wishes for a quick recovery!
AWWW REMI! Poor girl, I'm quite glad we mostly just have garter snakes up here that we come in contact with. Daisy loves to chase them! I myself am scared of the creatures.
