    DefaultBarking!

Since we came back from a visit to my parents last week, Artemis has decided that she has to bark at anything and everything that she sees outside! She was with my parent's lab and my brother's two labs, none of whom are barkers...they'll bark if someone comes to the door, but don't bark at things they see outside (other dogs, walkers...). Artemis barks at the neighbors out working in their yards, she barks if they come out to get in their cars, she barks if someone walks by. We live in a fairly quiet suburban subdivision and I don't want my dog to be a nuisance barker.

She doesn't bark much inside the house, usually just when she's surprised by something...like the other evening when she saw her reflection in the porch door.

    Suggestions?

I would teach her the "enough!" or "quiet!" command.
Do not coddle her or tell her it is "o.k." when she is barking, it just reinforces her barking
Once She knows the "enough" command watch her (or set her up for a barking) and watch for the behaviors that lead up to her barking (alert posture, focused attention, hackles up etc) and give the "enough" command and at the same time distract her, have her do a few obedience exercises and then reward THAT!

I agree with belles mom. Does she know the word speak? I taught my crew that and would have them bark and I would say enough(or quiet or whatever you want to use) and when they quit barking they were given a treat.

    She doesn't 'speak' on command.
She's now taken to barking in the house when startled.
Other than the visit to my folks the only other thing that has changed in her world is that we have new neighbors with a yappy dog. Could be that she's hearing the other dog and the "usual suspects" in the neighborhood barking back and that's set her off. Since the other dogs annoy me so much when barking, I don't want my dog to be part of that chaos! We don't leave her out when she's barking, but we don't want her to learn to bark to come in either!
