DefaultFriend found a pup last night - what is it? (pic)

On the way to New Years party (evening with friends) our friends had this little puppy run across the road in front of them - pitch black - a wonder they even saw it - so they brought it along to the party because of course they just couldn't leave it on the road. Because it is so tiny, I thought it was very young, but I think it's just a small dog puppy and maybe a little older than I first thought. Looks to have some dachshound in it, but probably something else too - kind of an ugly little thing, but friendly and spunky. It looks pretty well taken care of, nice smooth black coat, little webbed feet. Doug doesn't really want it, Michelle is totally besotted with it - so they are keeping it. The only house near where they found it is not a place that I would even drive up the driveway to ask if it came from there. So we gave them a crate, 2 books on raising puppies, some little bowls, and a little cat harness for it this morning and recommendations on puppy food from TSC - that is one lucky little dog! Here are some pics - any guess as to what it might be? The face really looks dachshounding to me, not sure what else.

Baxter and Emilu are fascinated by this new little creature - Emilu not so sure, Baxter just about hysterical to get to it.

Must admit it looks darling in this pic

A man resigned to getting a puppy - he's very sweet with it though

What a sweet little pup. He's definitely working his 'keep me' face in Doug's arms!

Ohhh, it definitely has a dachshund face and it's body looks longer with short legs. Maybe it's a black dachshund?

Nah, all of the black doxies have at least some brown on them. So maybe black doxie and ..it looks a lot like my dachshund beagle mix I grew up with. Only Ginger was liver colored.

I'll try to get a getter sideways picture of him later. Dachshound/beagle is a great possiblity around here. Nothing fluffy about his coat at all - so maybe Chi too.

He is adorable! I'm glad the guy is being a good sport about keeping him.

Are they doing anything to try and find the owners?

There are very few houses on the road, and the one closest is the place that I would not leave any dog at. A couple of Amish houses, which again, wouldn't try to figure out if the pup belongs to them - they will just replace it with another ill-bred dog from one of their litters. We know just about everyone else on the road - I'll ask around, and I'm sure they would give him back if they found the owner, but not sure how much time they will put into finding themselves.
