The nail came off completely. He either licked or chewed it off during the day.
Vet says that's fairly common.
And funny enough, he was walking better when I got home from work. Definitely more chipper, less grouchy.
Vet wanted an x-ray of the site. And that's where my day started going downhill.
The bone structure supporting the old nail is 'mushy.'
And she doesn't know why.
COULD BE cancer
COULD BE infection
She was curious to find out if it was #1, was it possible to see the cancer anywhere else? Best recommendation -- chest x-ray.
I said okay, thinking: If he's got cancer everywhere (Godforbid), there's not much sense marching ahead w/the toe removal, is there?
WHew - No cancer signs in the chest x-ray.
So now we're back to deciding. The surgery does involve a general because it involves the entire bone (says she).
And comes at a hefty pricetag.
So in an exercise of fiscal and physical restraint, I decided to go ahead w/the antibiotic, see where we are at the end of 10 days (maybe if it's an infection, it clears by then and he's hunky-dorey), and evaluate then.
She was fine w/that approach.
So we're home and resting. Oh. and he's wearing the Cone o'Shame to keep from licking. He is the very definition of forelorn.........................
Thks for all the concern and good thots, everyone. It means a lot.

Nothing like that Vet roller coaster, is there? ...could be cancer, could be infection, could be some you can't even pronounce, could a smug on the x-ray.. ARGHH!...
Anyway, good thoughts for Wes. I hope the cone of shame can come off soon.

Keeping fingers (and paws) crossed that the antibiotics do the trick.
Hang in there Dan.

Oh man. IT IS NOT CANCER!! Prayers that the antibiotic works, if not and surgery is needed, you know you'll have $$ from JL if needed! Me, anyway!

Prayers for Wesley. I'm glad the x-ray did not show cancer. Poor boy. Let's pray this antibiotic works and he'll be as good as new.
