My three year old lab has been shedding like crazy. Every time i brush him, the amount of hair that comes off him is absolutely insane. There is also a lot of flaky dry skin that is present. i have to sweep the floor and least once daily. i feel like i never get done cleaning up All of this hair!!! I have been thinking that maybe he needs a skin and coat supplement, or anti shed oil. Does anyone have any suggestions ?????
is this new? or has he always done this?
Charlie (foster) and Rocky
Did you research the breed ? Massive shedding is normal ! Flaky skin could be a food problem - what are you feeding him ?
I'm fully aware that lab shed heavily throughout the yr. I feed with Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice.
You could try some vegetable oil in the diet or oily fish as a supplement to help dry flaky skin. The alternative is a trip to the vet for advice.
Sophie has dry skin. The vet told us to get her cod liver oil gel caps. We give her 2 a day. She eats them right out of my hand! It's funny to hear her pop them in her mouth. If your dog won't do that, poke a hole in them and squeeze on food. You don't suppose he's developed an allergy do you? We put Sophie on grain free at 4 months when her hair was falling out and she was getting bald spots. She does great now. There are quite a few members that feed Pro Plan, but according to Dog Food Advisor, it only gets 2 stars out of five in their review. You can give him a can of sardines once a week too. Great for their coat.
Sharon, Blaise and Diesel.
besides the fish oil, and canned sardines and salmon, i add some organic coconut oil.
but i truly think they just shed like crazy.
or at least my yellow boy does.
I hope he's oK!
Thanks for all your advise i have an appointment for the vet tomorrow i'm sure we can figure out something. I was surprised at the ratings/reviews for Purina. I may need to switch his food.
