    QuestionHow much food?

    Hello!

I just bought Orijen Large Breed Puppy food but am not sure how much I should feed to Xane. The instructions on the package only start from 55 lbs. He just turned 4 months and weighs about 40 lbs. One cup of food has 450 kcal.

Any suggestions as to how to calculate the amount for him?

    Thanks!

Are you sure you are reading the package correctly? Look to make sure you are looking for his age AND weight.

From what I read it sounds like you are to feed them according to what they should weigh when they are full grown. So if you are looking at a 75 lb full grow lab then you feed him:

    Adult Weight: 65-90 lb: 1 1/2 - 3 months old: 2 - 2 1/4: cups/day
    Adult Weight: 65-90 lb: 3 - 9 months old: 3 3/4 - 4 1/2: cups/day
    Adult Weight: 65-90 lb: 9 - 14 months old: 4 1/4 - 5: cups/day

    Feeding:
High protein, low carbohydrate and moderate in calcium and phosphorus, ORIJEN PUPPY LARGE BREED mirrors the foods Mother Nature intended all puppies to eat, and naturally benefits all large breed puppies.

ORIJEN PUPPY LARGE BREED benefits puppies of all large breeds. As each puppy is different feeding amounts will vary. Use this chart as a guide and adjust feeding amounts accordingly. Feed twice daily and provide fresh clean water at all times.

Maintaining proper body weight contributes to longevity. Remember, a healthy puppy is lean and athletic.

    Daily Ration and Feeding Guide:
    Adult Weight: 55-65 lb: 1 1/2 - 3 months old: 1 3/4 - 2: cups/day

    Adult Weight: 65-90 lb: 9 - 14 months old: 4 1/4 - 5: cups/day
    Adult Weight: 90-130 lb: 1 1/2 - 3 months old: 2 1/4 - 2 1/2: cups/day

Oh wow, thanks mommacomet! I didn't even think to read it that way. Usually manufacturers tell you your puppy's current age correlated to his/her current weight and then give you the necessary amount to feed.

It is really hard to guesstimate his future weight. He maybe 80 but he may get over 100 coz his dad was 110 lbs. So should I just feed him 4 cups for now and see how his body looks?

Also, I am curious, do you feed or fed your puppy in the past this food? If I give 4 cups, that would amount to 1,800 kcal a day. Isn't that way too much for a 4 months old puppy?

I would start with the 4 cups and adjust as needed keeping an eye on his weight. I would give the vet a call as well (and/or the breeder) and see what they tell you about the calorie intake. I think also with calories it depends on what the source they come from.

ORIJEN PUPPY LARGE BREED has a Metabolizable Energy (ME) 3900 kcal/kg or 450 kcal per 250ml cup (115g). Calories are distributed for peak physical conditioning with 50% of calories from protein, 25% from fruit & vegetables and 25% from fat.
