Just to give an impression of the distance, those hay bales in the background are 132 yards from where I was standing, according to the range finder. This morning I was working with Rusty on VERY long (for him) double marks. We were using a Retrieve-R-Trainer and launching the small dummies 130 yards + with a 15 mph NW wind behind me.
Rusty would sit at my left heel and wait while I launched two dummies, about 40 yards apart in the landing zone, out to and beyond the hay bales. He was given a line and sent on his name for each, one-at-a-time.
After he picked up the first mark, he began looking for the 2nd but was immediately called off with a recall whistle.
He was then reseated at left heel and released for the 2nd mark. He did yeoman's work and nailed that 2nd dummy back at the 130 yard fall area. The dummies are only fist size if you aren't familiar with them. They each have had a 6" red flag attached and they have a fair amount of scent on them from both the gun powder launching rounds and from previous retrieves.
Only once out of 8 marks did I have to do a some remote handling to get him back into the fall area to help him find the dummy. He responds exceptionally well to remote whistle sits and hand signal recasts, even at that distance. Every other retrieve was at least as good if not better than either Cappy or Remi did at the same age. Rusty will be two in December. I think he's going to have an outstanding season provided we get some ducks down here.
Good boy, Rusty ... Atta boy!

Good boy!! He is just one awesome dog.
No doubt he is proving to be exceptional in the field, but look who is training him! How about a lot of credit there!
