    DefaultRescued a Golden yesterday

We live out in the boonies, surrounded by cows and chickens and bean fields. It's glorious.

However, most of our neighbours are hardcore farm folk, the "dogs are animals and therefore live outside" type, so we sometimes see roamers that have gotten loose in the area.

Driving to town yesterday, there was a golden RIGHT on the side of the road. So I made boyfriend stop so we could see if he would let us approach and we could check for tags, etc. Rudy got out first and the dog approached him, low slung body, low tail wag and happy-whining. Rudy backs up against the car and says "stay over there, I think he's pissed!"

I had seen/heard some of the approach so went around anyways thinking that he must be nuts. When I got over I could see what had Rudy freaked out, golden was displaying all his pearly whites in a full-out submissive smile. I couched down and started petting him and it was like no one had touched this dog in years, he all but melted on my lap. Kinda thin, crappy coat with lots of mats, poor dude. I have a crate for Baloo in the car so we got him in it and drove around, he belonged to a family down the road, and of course, kept in a kennel outside.

I want to steal him sooo bad. What a sweetheart. Who keeps a golden in a pen outside? Why? Argh.

I'm re-thinking the title of this thread. "returned a golden to misery yesterday" might be a better fit, gah.

Poor guy. I'm glad he wasn't hit by a car.

Poor dog...the owners have no clue what a loyal loving friend they have.
If he gets out again....keep him!!

Our first lab, Heidi, always did the submissive smile thing for strangers. It scared a few away, but also got her mace in the face from a meter reader. Maybe the family who keeps him outside will give him or sell him to you if you ask.

Aw - wish you had kept him. He's just back in jail now, poor guy.

Maybe you could approach the owners and say something like....would you be willing to part with the golden? You could say you've been looking to get another dog, and this one seemed special...or something like that. Maybe they'd give him too you. Ya never know....
