I think the shelter lied! Ok, not really, they do their best, but when you post "Retriever Mix; Large Dog," one should expect a large dog.
Brownie is 5 months and maybe pushing 25 lbs. We watch all of our dog's diets carefully since our GSD, Duke, is allergic to nearly everything. She started losing her baby teeth and gaining her adult teeth. Although she looks like a Lab, down to the web toes, she has the size of a Cocker Spaniel.
She's a scrapper and holds her own pretty well when playing with Duke. She loves cuddles and loves to clean Duke's and Rondo's teeth/gums/ears and my husband's goatee.
Think she may just be a small Lab? Maybe mixed with a Spaniel or similar dog?
Here are some pics:
Brownie (5 mo), Duke (6 mo), Rondo (our newest rescue and 7 y/o)
Are you sure she's five months? Baloo started losing teeth around three months. Either way, she'll probably top out around 50 pounds or so, which is small-ish for a lab so she's probably mixed with something smaller. But Baloo is full lab, male and full-grown and only weighs 60, so it's not all that tiny.
Duke is very handsome, reminds me a little of Rude.
Baloo - 5 year old black lab
Peanut - 7 year old minpin
Monster - 3-ish year old frenchie/jack, rescue
Could have some type of spaniel or something in her. She si a cutie and so are your 2 gsd's.

Oh she is so cute!!
She's cute, whatever she is.

Stoli is purebred and only 62 lbs at 2 years old. Some are just small.........
They're all gorgeous!

She doesn't look pure to me, but nothing screams spaniel. Actually from her front, I see Doberman, something very broad chested.
But she's cute!
And I second what Kate said, if you're not sure about age, teeth are a good indicator. Nola has started losing teeth, and she's 3.5 months.

Thanks all. She is spoiled because of her cuteness....and she has to put up with the smelly boys. The shelter listed her as 3 months when we got her in June. The day after we got her, the vet said she was closer to 9 weeks. We're going off what the vet said even though I still have my doubts.
She's really laid back for a puppy and has the "Whatever. It's all good," view of things. She is also very Southern Belle like. Dainty and proper...until she starts scrapping with Duke. Think Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. Proper one moment, then ripping into Rhett or Ashley the next.
She'll stand up to the boys and gives as good as she gets. It's like David vs. Goliath. Duke and her are inseparable, though. We can't take one anywhere without the other.
Cuddles and face cleaning time like this...
will often devolve into a wrestling match like this (taken a week after we got her). She's got ahold of his cheek while he is going for her throat. Trust me, she has drawn blood. Duke has not. He just drools all over her.:
