    DefaultNLR - i think i saved a life tonight

On our evening walk, we are often joined by a young lad (he is 12 yr old) and his dog (a bichon/terrier mix). The dog is just over a year old and has a ‘wooly’ coat, like a bichon. As we walked around the field we were set upon by some wasps. Thankfully Harvey and Seth were ok. We are pretty sure that Elvis (the bichon/terrier mix) got stung. After that, Elvis just kept laying down. The lad mentioned that they had already been out walking for an hour. I advised his to take the dog home and rest him.
Next thing we knew, the dog collapse, was totally unresponsive. The boy picked him up and the dog’s eyes were just staring ahead. I felt his chest and could feel no heartbeat. I grab him out of the boy’s arms, passed Harvey’s lead to the boy and gave him my phone. I told him to ring his mum and tell her we were on our way and she needed to get the car ready. Then I ran, I don’t know where I found the strength from, but I had this little dog over my shoulder and the only thing I could think of was , that we were too late.

His mum was waiting for us, by the time we got there, I could feel a heartbeat from Elvis again. I don’t know if running with him (all that pounding against my shoulder/chest) ‘kick’ started his heart again or what, but I swear that dog had no heart beat 3 mins before. He was still very dazed so they were going to get him to the emergency vet for a check over. We don’t really know what caused it, could be the wasp sting, could be he was exhausted, could be a combination of the 2.
What I do know, it scared the hell out of me. Few tears from me tonight.

"A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?"- John Grogan

It scared the hell out of me. I still am trying to understand how he could be 'dead' one minute and alive the next. DH reckons it probably was due to his chest smacking against my shoulder as i ran with him in my arms.
he was doing ok when i left them, he was breathing and coming round. Hopefully i will see them tomorrow (although i hope they leave Elvis at home so he can rest up for a few days!).

Really got me thinking thou, what if it had of been my Harvey. No way in hell could i lift his 40kg body over my shoulder. I am going to look in to doing a animal first aid class, maybe they can teach me proper CPR for animal.

BRAVO, Bernie! Such quick action. It may very well be that your run with him thumping on your shoulder/chest "kick started" his heart.
My hat is off to you, dear girl!!
