DefaultHelp us on a name for a new Lab...

Forgot to mention--she is a former Seeing Eye dog so she will not have an AKC name. Also, we have a preschool aged daughter so any name has to be easy and probably feminine. Not sure if the pooch is going to be a Yellow, Black or Chocolate... Any thoughts, guys? Thanks!

I like Gemma. Does your breeder want the kennel name included in the registered name?

Since you're writers, maybe an author or character? Bean's from a book, and another JL pup - Ender (where's Ender's Mom, anyway?) was from the same series.

    She posts in O&E often.

As for the names - you can have a list as long as your arm, but when you get your girl she may decide on something totally different!

Former as in a retired adult or an older puppy that didn't make the cut? The reason I'm asking is The Seeing Eye names their puppies before they go to puppy raisers (I'm assuming other guide dog schools do, too). So, if she's a retired adult, she'll have had years of good memories with her name. Camilla is a nice name, but I like "Millie" as a call name instead of Cami. I like Story, too.

    Good thinking on that one.

    Pippa
    Too trendy.

I think I like Calla but MicksMom raises a VERY good point about the dog's name at this point (if it is an adult dog).

I like Story. And - while an adult will come with a name, adult dogs get renamed all the time and do fine (all those shelter dogs who arrived at strays - new names for them all the time). I am my chocolate's 3rd owner and he had 3 names. Adapted to our name quickly.

Oh, I didn't mean the dog wouldn't adapt to a new name. I know adult rescues get renamed all the time with no problem (I highly doubt the Sibe/GSD we found was named Heineken by whoever dumped him. LOL). I just meant a retired service dog would have such a positive connection to their name that I wouldn't want to change it. Plus, it takes the pressure off of coming up with a name.

How about "Scout" from "To Kill a Mockingbird"---we wanted to use that one but we called my daughter Scout when she was younger and she wouldn't allow us to use it for the dog!
