Okay so I noticed my Brother checked in at the vet on Facebook... So I asked him if his Chocolate Lab was ok... Just in for the usual.
So a little bit later he tells me he's looking into shaving her...
The Vet told him a lot of lab owners do it for keeping their dogs cooler.
Ok.. So... Emmett is my first Lab and he's only 8 months old (OMG Where did 8 freaking months go) so I was very confused.
Is it really that common to shave a lab?
Not common and it is VERY VERY bad for labradors. Their fur protects them from the sun and the heat, to shave them REMOVES their protection. There are few breeds that should be shaved in teh summer and labradors are NOT one of them.
I would get a new vet, that is terrible advice. just terrible.
ETA: the only valid reason to shave a lab is for medical reasons.

Tanya... Thanks for the info. I'm going to pass it on to him.
No way, never... They "shave" their undercoats naturally when they shed. Labs are not even long haired, they have a medium length coat that never get tangles or matts. The outer guard hair is what prevents things from getting in their skins, it repels dirt, dust, etc. If you shave the guard hair you will be exposing their skin.
Just give them a good brushing and they take care of themselves, they get rid of excess undercoat on the spring and then grow a thick fur for the winter.
I looked into doing this before my first child was born. I was paranoid about all the hair. I called a few groomers and couldn't find a single one who would clip Mandy. THANKFULLY! Then I did more research. I hope your brother changes his mind.

there is a reason they don't shed themselves bald. that is how nature wanted it! You shave them your taking the protective layer of coat off them.
Good God.. what school did that vet go to?!?! Tell him to get a new one!!!
As the others had said, NO! Labs should NOT be shaved. That being said, there are two Labs at the doggie day care I work at that are regularly shaved and they look awful. Really, you can barely recognize them as Labs.
