DefaultJack was seen by a specialist Tuesday

Jack's vet had never seen a dog displaying the symptoms Jack had so referred us to a specialist. The special vet was with Jack for over 90 minutes. She diagnosed he was a wonderful old lab with a great temperament. As to what is going on medically, he is arthritic , going through some old dog stuff but she could not say for sure what was going on with his breathing. As far as she could determine, he is getting air, his tongue is nice and pink as are the gums, he does not appear to be in any distress. Every once in a while she hears what could be paralysis in the larynx, but nothing is showing up on the x-rays. Laryngeal paralysis is a progressive disease. It can be fast or it can be slow but it cannot be stopped.

To get a definitive diagnosis Jack must go to another specialist where he will be lightly sedated and a flexible scope will be inserted down the airway so they can observe his breathing. They will also take samples from inside the lungs to rule out infection.

So for now we need to limit his swimming, though this evening he did this himself. He retrieved out of the pool three times and then while I was in the pool he stood on the deck and dropped the ball in the water for me to retrieve and toss back to him. Buddy retrieves but drops the bumper on the deck. So Jack would wait for Buddy to get out of the pool and drop the bumper so he could pick it up and bring it to me so I could throw it back in the pool for buddy to retrieve. Also no neck leashing. He needs to wear a harness for leash walking.

Last week he sounded really bad. Today was very mild since we were seeing a specialist. Maybe with the next referral, he won't show any symptoms at all.

I hope it's a passing problem. My kids always got so much better in the Doctor's waiting room too!

Maybe Jack is trying to show Buddy he's supposed to bring the bumper to you.

    Prayers for Jack's health.
