Just wondering if all Labs do this. It started a few years ago when she wanted to go outside. It was a very brief, barely audible groan. It got my attention so of course she continued doing it (trained me). It's almost like a language; you can definitely tell when it's more urgent. She actually came upstairs and woke me up one morning. She was just going bananas. I let her outside and she took off like a rocket. There was a rabbit in the back yard
You should hear her when we pull into the PetSmart parking lot. It seems like on each trip, she recognizes the route further from the store.
Man's best friend indeed.

That's funny! I have one very vocal Lab - he groans and moans and carries on all the time. Once while doing his routine he made a sound that was quite close to saying "Mama". And then he did it one more time. We all just about died laughing.

Both girls will make that noise if you scratch behind their ears very hard......I call it their old man groan.
Moka is very vocal, she talks all the time.
Java is the strong, silent type. She never makes noise.
It goes on in our house during bitey face, I say they sound like pregnant cows.......... Chewbacca is a better description.
Remy is very talkative from groaning when you rub his ears to his "reverse-snore" grunt when he wants something (like the fridge door is open and he's looking in...."snork") and incessant whining when we are not doing what he wants. Plus the sigh of disgust when he realizes he needs to give up on something. And the high pitched whine his sister gets when she has something he wants....ooooh...that one is painful!

Both mine do this, especially when they're playing bitey-face. Samm doesn't do it any other time than that, but Kai will "talk" to me with his Chewie voice when he's being a spazz.
