Tell him no? Keep him on lead?

It's probably actually really good for his skin.

    Greg,

It's a dog thing. Mine don't have any cow poop so they find dead animals. Thank God for our pond.

    EXTREMELY doubtful.

My Lab does this almost daily. Not in cow poop because our morning walks aren't near cows, but she finds stinky stuff to roll her shoulders and neck against more mornings than I wish.

IMO, this is a evolutionary hangover from their predator/scavenger ancestry to disguise their scent to any/all other prey &/or predator animals so that they'll think, "Hey! There's obviously a cow turd walking nearby -- no need to be defensive/or in predation mode!"

Swimming will often cleanse this, flushing the offending spots off with fresh water (a hand held shower on a flexible line is a god-send) often does the trick, and -- if needed -- use spot cleaning with a shampoo especially formulated for dogs (any form of human shampoo is MUCH too acidic for dog skin).

Teaching "Leave it!" is of some partial help but never 100% effective -- even when your dog is well-trained, you have to see and immediately react to its positioning to rub the stinky on BEFORE it gets applied.

Bob PR., THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION. Jack likes to herd the cattle ,that and lately he has been flushing out quail . so your dead on about him trying to mask his scent the flexible shower head is a great idea.he loves swimming but hates the tub.

Put a large rubber tub mat (or two) over the floor of the tub so that your dog's toes don't slip as much. Helps cooperation mightily.
