But that's not a good excuse for missing the 2nd half opener today. Carol and I are both really under the weather with miserable colds. However, we just couldn't couldn't have Rusty miss the first chance to hunt in two weeks.
Oh, the sixth bird for a limit? Well, between whiffing on two mallards I shouldn't have, and then failing to find the 2nd drake of a double that sailed 150 yards or so, we called that a limit and headed home.
Rusty wanted to show his appreciation for being taken this morning at the traditional wash station pose. We both had a hot shower and then a hot breakfast at 10 am.
BTW ... if Rusty never improved one bit from where his skills as a duck dawg are as of right now, he's still well beyond our original expectations of him and we're really proud of that "little boy" who will have his 1st birthday next week. Whata good boy, Rusty. Equally important, he's best friends with Cappy and Remi and he's earned his place as an upstanding family member.

Awww... Rusty's giving kisses
Aw, nice of you to take him out even though you didn't feel well. It looks like he was really appreciative. Hope you all had nice afternoon on the couch!

I hope you and Carol both feel better soon.
Good Job Rusty! A year already? Time passes too quick!
How is Rusty dealing with the cooler weather and water? Seems like he's not having any problems!

Jackie this dog never ceases to amaze me. You might notice in the pics above that he wasn't wearing his vest this morning. It was in the mid-40s, the pond water is at least that cold and the wind was from the NNW at 10-15 mph. He shakes well and I dry him off with a towel when he comes back into the blind after a retrieve and I have yet to see a shiver from him. Monday will be the test. Forecast is 25 degrees and 10 mph N wind. He WILL be wearing a vest then.
That's wonderful, Jim! I know you were concerned about his thinner coat, but looks like it may turn out to be a non-issue. I hope so!

I knew I should have taken pictures of this.
Ever see a yard full of Lab bunnies? You know, when you take them out in the yard with a stiff breeze blowing and use a comb and Furminator to remove the dead coat? I had Cappy out near the wash station on Wednesday with a strong E wind blowing away from the house so it became the opportune time to give him a good winter coat brushing. I mean to tell you that within ten minutes it looked like we had a herd of yellow bunnies racing across the lawn towards the pond!
Then gave Remi a good brushing and a Furminator once over and got maybe 10% of what came off of Cappy. Finally it was Rusty's turn ... you couldn't fill a chewing gum wrapper with what came off of him ... he simply doesn't shed! Honest Injun.
