    DefaultFish Oil for Itchy Skin

Bailey has very itchy skin this time of year. I was looking through old threads and saw some people use fish oil. I am going to try this and hope it gives her some relief. Do you use human fish oil capsules or are there ones specially formulated for dogs? Also, how much would I give Bailey? She is about a year and a half and 58 pounds. Thanks for you advice!

I buy Costco brand fish oil pills and give each dog one a day. Also supplement with cans of sardines several times a week.

I buy the human ones, too- Nature's Bounty. I give Caleb 1,000 mg once a day. He also gets a can of sardines (in either water or oil) once a week. Oh- I buy Salmon Oil, not Fish.

Murphy gets the canned sardines too. He gobbles them up. No more "dandruff" for him!!!! =)

Thanks!! I will pick up some fish oil when I go to the store. I'll try the sardines too...thanks for the advice. Do I just dump the sardines in her food? Some of you mentioned salmon oil....what is the difference between salmon oil and fish oil?

Yep, just open the can and dump them in her dish. Word of warning, tho- your house will smell like sardines for the better part of the day.

Fish oil is from different types of fish, salmon oil from salmon only.

I got a large bottle of fish oil (oil) when I ordered my last bottle of Cosequin. I didn't start using it right away, but started when I got Baxter. Emilu has always had some "skin issues", and battle "doggy smell" alot - I think that she is much better since starting on the fish oil.

Autumn gets 1,000 mg of fish oil a day (the capsules from Costco). It's definitely helped with her itching and dandruff. When we go out for a walk we get so many compliments on how gorgeous her coat is.
