    SmileWANTS OUT

Our Lab is 6mths old and he loves to go for rides and trips with us. But when we stop and need to get out of the truck which hes in the back seat its like a panic situation for him to get out of the truck? 1 time I left him in the truck while I was pumping gas and he didnt like it. Is this the cause of his antics now and If so how do I get him to stop with the panic of wanting out as soon as we stop, Thanks

Teach him 'settle', 'lay down' and 'stay'.

Two approaches that I'd use in tandem:

GIVE him something to do. Train him, for example, that when you leave the truck, he's to DOWN in the backseat.

Keep at it: Reinforce. Correct. Praise.

Then GRADUALLY work on getting out of the truck: Just open the door. Praise the good behavior. Fix the bad.
Then put a leg out. Same drill: Praise/correct.
Then get out of the truck. Praise/correct.
Keep at it 'til you can leave the truck and go out of sight.

Be sure not to progress too quickly.
And backtrack to a prior level if he seems to 'hit the wall.' It means you've gone too far too quickly.

With time, this should be fixable.

Orson was absolutely horrible with this when he was a pup. He was a Houdini at gets out of the vehicle when we stopped which presented a very dangerous situation. It took a long time but he finally will stay put when you tell him. For a while I thought it would never happen.

Work on a solid sit/stay in or out of the truck.

    Excellent advice as usual!

Anyway you could get a crate into your truck?
