Yesterday my 3 1/2 year old lab was running after a rabbit and she turned sharp and her back legs went one way and her front legs went the other way. She needed to have emergency surgery last night because of a rupture vertebrae in her back. Her back legs at this point are still not moving however she can feel pain when you squeeze between her toes. Has anyone had this type of injury or surgery, we are just looking for advice?

How horrible; I am so sorry. Can't help with advice since I've never heard of this before but if you have a Veterinary School near you I would call them and make an appointment.

Your pup is in our prayers.

It sounds like a portion of the spinal cord was trapped by a ruptured disc (between two vertebrae). If so, it may take some time for motor control to return. I think it's good news that she has sensation.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry, and I sure hope it all turns out OK. It does seem like a good thing that she can feel her toes.

Since she had surgery, and can feel pain, it sounds like she has a good chance of recovery. My sister lab mix was hit by a car and paralyzed in the back legs. They took care of her for weeks and weeks, carrying her out to potty, etc, and now she runs around like anything - alittle more carefully, but most people would never know there was anything wrong with her. Is you doggie still at the hospital?

I am SO sorry about your girl. I agree that it seems like a good sign that she can at least feel her toes.

My late lab had herniated a disc in his neck...he jumped up and come down on his front feet...dropped to the ground unable to move his limbs....it was so scary. We had to carry him to the car on a carpet....fortunately it was not a complete herniation and IV steroids were enough to decrease the inflammation but it did take several days for him to really get his movement back.

I will keep you and your girl in my prayers. Hang in there. (((hugs)))

No advice either, just a lot of prayers! I do second the idea of taking her to a Veterinary school, they often have specialists and multiple vets can take a peek!

We are picking her up today. Her right back leg is getting more mobile to the point she can barley stand. Her right hind leg is moving a little bit but still drags if she tries to walk. We will know more once we pick her up and thank you very much for your words of encouragement.
