Today, the boys were outside playing in the yard. Our yard is fully fenced with a side gate. They were playing quiet which should have made me clue in. I went out to bring them in for a walk then dinner..when I realized they weren't there. I looked over and saw the gate was partially open. Now 30 min had elapsed since I'd put them outside. They have only ever gotten out once and it was to our front yard.
Home alone, I grabbed their collars and leashes and jumped in the car. i called my mom freaking out not sure what to do. I drove around our neighborhood and lucky for me one person told me they had just gone by. 2 minutes later two people were flagging me down. Got out to discover the dogs were there, three blocks from our house. They went to a lab owners home. They ate supper and were just hanging out. I apologized I don't know how many times, put them in the car. I have never felt like such a bad mother before until today. I am putting another lock on the side gate so no more of these incidents happen. I thought labs were loyal and didn't run away..

I'm glad they got home safe. Labs are loyal but if they see something interesting outside the fence, they may just go, given the chance.
Yikes! Glad that they were safe and sound!
The kicker of it all is Hunter didn't want to leave their house lol. I had to con him into coming home. Chrome looked at me like Mom I found a new place to play

Good thing they did not get hit. Loyalty really has nothing to do with this. Even dogs who have a playmate get bored. The outside world is very tempting and interesting. It would be an unusual dog that would not go on an explore.

You were lucky. It could have so easily ended in tragedy. What type of lock have you got on the gate? This is my set up. This gate is the only access to my back yard short of climbing over a 6' fence. You might want to consider something similar.
Have done the same with Sam. Luckily have gotten her back unharmed.
Labs are loyal and people dogs, but they love adventure as well.
Don't feel too bad, just remember to check the gate before you let them outside.
glad they got back safe!
I'm glad they came upon another Lab home to take them in. And they didn't miss a meal.
