Brand new here, and looking forward to checking in and reading the posts from time to time.
We adopted from the local shelter a 2 year old Black Lab last year after losing our Shephard/Chow/Sharpei mix at 13 due to a stroke.
Having had a Lab Mix as a boy, I knew the breed to be energetic, fun, and extremely loyal and gentle. Baxter is no slouch in any of the previously mentioned categories.
Anyway, we were told he was pure Lab. He certainly looks like a pure lab, and again...has all the characteristics of Lab.
He does have two black spots on his tongue though that show when he pants heavily. These spots are inherent in Chows (so I am told).
Is it possible to have a Black (pure bred) Lab with such markings?
Absolutely. Mine guy has a small spot at the very back of his tongue. Never heard that Chows have black spots on their tongues. I always thought they all had those weird purple-y tongues.
it's just excess pigment (like human freckles), many dogs have spotted tongues. Chows and Shar peis have all-over blue-black tongues, gums and roof of their mouths.
