KENT NEWS: A puppy breeder who left many of her 70 dogs living in "squalid" conditions has been banned from owning animals for life.

Some of the animals found at Melanie Kingís kennels in Teynham, near Faversham, also had untreated medical conditions and had to be put down.

The 55-year-old was convicted of six related charges when she appeared before Sittingbourne magistrates this week, and received a 140-day jail term suspended for a year.

She was also ordered to perform 240 hoursí unpaid work and pay £250 court costs.

RSPCA inspector Ray Bailey said: "Melanie King was totally irresponsible.

"She had been given previous warnings but failed to take action to safeguard the animalís welfare. The conditions many of the dogs were kept in were squalid and truly appalling.

"We are delighted the court has recognised the seriousness of the offences and banned her from keeping all animals for the rest of her life.

"We couldnít have asked for any more."

One of the dogs found at the Whents Farm kennels in February last year was suffering from serious dental problems caused by an abscess in her mouth.

The condition was so severe that some of the animalís teeth had to be removed by a vet.

Another dog was effectively blinded in both eyes by a condition called entropion, and had to be put down as a result.

Mr Bailey added: "Anyone thinking of buying a puppy should always ask plenty of questions and visit the breeder to see the puppies with their mother in the place where they were born.

"Buying puppies from irresponsible breeders is simply fuelling the market."

Another pathetic BS slap on the wrist "sentence". It's the same here. WTF don't the courts get serious with these arseholes & throw away the key? If the law wont allow it, WTH don't the politicians bring in the laws to allow it?

"We are delighted the court has recognised the seriousness of the offences and banned her from keeping all animals for the rest of her life"
Oh yeah? How are they going to police it if she moves to another area & starts all over again?

Cruelty to animal laws should be MUCH MORE severe. I agree with Garth, it is always just a slap on the wrist. If laws were tougher...maybe, just maybe these disgusting incidents would happen less.

What are they going to do...keep tabs on her the rest of her life and make sure she never owns animal again...give me a break, just throw her in jail for alot longer than 140 days, so she can not own animals again!!

Well - glad to hear this does not just happen in the US.

Can't believe that they put down a dog for entropion.
