    DefaultCKC Question

A friend of mine is looking to get a dog (not a lab) and a breeder she has found says the dogs are CKC registered, but ONLY after proof the dog has been spayed/neutered. The price is $500 but if you're planning to breed or show the cost is $1000.

What are the rules regarding registration with the CKC? Are they allowed to wait to register it or is there a deadline?

This is part of their website info:
    $500
Puppies have been Vet checked and have had their first shots and been dewormed and microchip.
Purebred Dam from champion blood lines, Purebred Sire
CKC registered. Registration once dog is fixed.
If breeding or show the cost is 1,000.00

The only legit dog registrations in the USA are AKC and UKC.

CKC is a sham so that people can claim a dog is "registered", "with papers" and sell it for more money

    IMO

ETA -- In light of Labby's comment (below) that the CKC = Canadian Kennel Club is very legitimate, let me clarify that my comments apply to the Continental Kennel Club in the USA.

There is a CKC in Canada. The Canadian Kennel Club. Any other CKC is not legit.

    Uhhhhhh Bob.......

CKC stands for Canadian Kennel Club - which is our equivalent of your AKC....

    Soooooooo, not a sham.

I can't really answer your question though, although first reading could go two ways- by selling a pet quality dog with no papers, they are cutting down on the ability for any potential backyard breeders to advertise pups as CKC registered, thus limiting their selling potential. (Even unadvised people look for papers after all....) If that is the case, then good on them, and if you want papers for whatever reason, then they are indeed forcing you to spay/neuter. Under this philosophy, a show dog is more $$ as you are getting what you pay for in this case - a show prospect.

Who knows though. She should call and ask.

Karina, there is a Continental Kennel Club in the US which is a sham. They frequently use the CKC initials. So depending on where this person is, will depend on which CKC they are referring to.

I'm just doing a quick run through of their website and saw this:

If the breeder refers to the CKC, confirm that they mean The Canadian
Kennel Club because a number of unofficial registries are also using these
    initials.
That's definitely something I would do.. and here are the FAQ - they talk about registering a dog: http://www.ckc.ca/en/Default.aspx?tabid=103&ItemId=2

    It's the Canadian Kennel Club.

From the information I was given by my friend if she doesn't want to neuter, which would give the kennel the assumption of breeding or showing, the price of the dog is $1000 and she'd get her papers at that time. However, since she is planning to neuter, the cost of the dog is $500 and she won't get her papers until she has proof of the neuter.

On thought I had: Can the kennel owner register the dog under their name and then later, at the time of proof of neuter, change the name on the registration? Still, if someone buys a dog and signs all the contracts and stuff should the dog not be registered to the person who bought the dog?

Like I said before I'm not sure of all the rules for the CKC.

The price difference thing has me confused as well. If the dogs are show and breeding quality, why would they charge less if promises of neuter/spay were made?

Red flags were flying all over the place, which is why I asked the question about registration.
