    DefaultCrab apples?

Are they ok for dogs to eat? There is a huge tree where we walk, and I noticed Bogey chewing happily away yesterday.

Down the hatch before I got to him of course. So just wondering. Are they the same as regular apples you'd buy.

I do know that too many seeds can cause problems, but other than that, harmless right?

My kids chow down on crab apples all the time. I have a crab apple tree right outside my house and they will even stand on their hind legs and 'graze' on the apples still on the branches!

University of VT has them listed as poisonous along with apples.

    Poisonous Plants

They list the seeds as being the toxic component. I think the deal with apple seeds is that they contain cyanide, but they would have to be chewed and in large quantity to elicit any toxic effects.

Tried to post a response earlier, but it appears to have gotten lost or deleted.

According to U of MN College of Veterinary Medicine, a 50 lb dog would have to eat a bushel of Apple SEEDS, and crush each of them in the process to have any toxic effect. True, they contain cyanide, but in a veri small quantity. Imagine how many apple seeds get crushed in the making of apple cider or apple sauce!

Anyway, with two apple trees on the property, and a crab apple tree across the street, it became a real concern when the apples that drop became HKs favorite treat. I called the U of MN to get clarity on the cyanide, and that is what they told me. They added that the benefit from eating the fresh fruit far outwieghed the almost negligible risk of cyanide poisoning.

Do any of us know of a Lab that takes the time to chew to a point that they would " crush" the seed. Certainly not Sammi- those seeds go in whole and come out whole

I should probably mention for those that don't know. Siggy pic, the one on the left. That is Hershey Kisses finishing a Haralson Apple she found.
