I just spoke to the breeder. BESS has been eating Diamond Naturals Large Breed Lamb and Rice Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food.
The dogfoodanalysis website indicates that it possibly contains Ethoxyquin. Should I be concerned about that? I do not mind spending some extra money to insure BESS gets the right diet.
Keep her on this for a week once you get her home, then slowly switch her to the food of your choice.
Baloo - 5 year old black lab
Peanut - 7 year old minpin
Monster - 3-ish year old frenchie/jack, rescue
As far as I know it does NOT contain it and Diamond Nat is a good food.
Oh and I think that website is just a lot of scare tactics.
The "right" food always differs with the individual Lab. If the breeder has been raising great dogs on the Diamond Naturals LBP food, IMO you should have some compelling reasons to switch foods.
Up to about 10-15 years ago, ethoxyquin was widely used as the principle or major preservative in probably most major dog food lines. After evidence was discovered that it had carcinogenic properties, those manufacturers began dropping its major use, some much sooner than others.
I doubt you need to be that concerned about the ethoxyquin in the DN LBP food because the fish meal it would be found in is a very minor ingredient -- it's listed in 15th place.
But please call their customer service # on Monday and ask them whether it's used as a preservative in the fish in that food. Their number is 1-800-797-9607.
Also, look up the Dog Food Analysis's rating of Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Large Breed Puppy Food.
You'll see they also raised that same question about ethoxyquin used in preserving the fish. Then they finally added that they received written assurance from Schell & Kampeter that the fish used was NOT preserved with ethoxyquin.
It seems very improbable to me that S&K would buy 2 different grades of fish for similar products made in the same plant. So I strongly suspect that what's true for their CS4tDLS-LBP food is also true for their DN-LBP food -- that both are ethoxyquin free.
But call and ask. I've always found them to be very straight-forward and helpful.

Thanks for the messages. I do not plan on doing anything radical. For now the breeder will give me a reasonable supply of the Diamond Food. There are 2 stores within 3 miles (Pet Supplies Plus and Canine Commissary) which sell many premium brands including the Chicken Soup, Innova and many others.....
Don't believe everything you read. Most foods contain some traces of ethoxyquin.
