This is mostly a exercise in curiousity, since I have a black lab pup and wouldn't have made any other choice.
A friend wanted to know what some of the other "friendly" breeds were good choices without entering into the tiny dog categories. Feel free to add to the list if you have suggestions.

Most often Labs are compared, personality wise, to Golden Retrievers. Personally, if Labs did not exist, I would probably have a German Shorthaired Pointer or a Black and Tan Coonhound
Duke and Freckles at their country home
Well, considering Ken & I have a soft spot for Golden Retrievers and Siberian Huskys, it's safe to say it would be one of them.
I'd probably have a few more beagles.
Seamus and Flynn
Of the breeds you listed, probably a boxer or a poodle. My uncle has a standard poodle, and I swear that dog has a higher IQ than most humans! And boxers are just cute, if not gassy.
Weims are cute, but they are very, very needy.
If not a Lab then a golden or a Newfie.
Another Golden...or a Burnese Mountain Dog...or a Newfie. I likes me some slobber and fur.
Melissa, Remy & Brooklyn
A golden retriever would be my first choice.
