    DefaultHuck's hurt leg

Hi I joined the forum awhile back right before I got my 3rd lab Huck, our chocolate baby ...I haven't been on in a long while...just busy with training him as well as work...kids.. etc. He is going to be a year old in a few days.

Well about a month ago all 3 went charging into the dining room from the den when I heard aloud yelp. Huck the youngest came hobbling back into the den. He was not walking on his back left leg. He rested for a little while then was up and about like nothing happened. However every once in awhile he would favor the back leg that was hurt...he would limp a few steps then like nothing happened again walk on it. Unfortunately New Year's Eve his fell coming up the deck steps...his leg fell through the steps...my husband had to pull him out since he couldn't get up on his own. Now he hasn't put full weight on it since then...I guess I was in hopes it would get better but it is not...We have an appointment with the vet Wednesday...I fear bad news.

I think it is his knee...has anyone here had any experience with knee surgery? Or injuries? He luckily doesn't seem to be in any pain...the hardest thing is trying to keep him "quiet" He wants to romp and play with his older pack mates.

Well it's hard to say what exactly it could be. I would try strict rest (crated at all times, leash walks only) for a few days and see if it gets any better.. If not, I would get him to the vet. It could be a lot of things, but the vet might be able to just move the knee around and confirm what it is, but they might also want xrays, just in case.

Good luck - I hope you figure something out.. it's scary when you aren't sure what's going on.

I hope Huck is alright, I'll say some prayers for him!

I would go to your vet appointment and take it from there. In the meantime STRICT rest, as Justine advised. I'm talking, keep him in a crate, and take him out on the leash for potty breaks.

Hey! We took Huck to the vet on Wednesday...they did x-rays and it is his knee. The petella is completely out of place. While he was sedated the vet said she could easily manipulate it in and out of place. She said she put it back where it should be but said he would need surgery. One of the other vets in the group has preformed this surgery but only on small dogs...he wasn't in at the time but she said she would show him the x-rays and see if he thought he could do the surgery....After discussing it my husband, when we got home, he and I decided we didn't want to take a chance with a vet who had never preformed this kind of surgery on a large dog... so we have an appointment with an orthopedic vet this Wednesday.

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts! I will definitely keep you posted!

Best of luck with Hucks surgery. I'm sure he'll be fine in the end.

I don't blame you on going to an ortho dr. You know what's best for Huck! Good healing thoughts for you and Huck. BTW, I love his name.
