DefaultGood thoughts for Henery, please? :( UPDATE

We finally saw the vet today at almost 4:30 (he was running a little behind!!) and while he's not our regular vet, we've seen him before and he's pretty good.

So, I was mistaken, it's not his upper right first molar, it's his upper right fourth premolar, or carnassial tooth, the largest tooth in a dog's mouth. He broke off the cusp tip, exposing the pulp, and there is also a slab fracture.

My understanding is that without the slab fracture, Henry could have had a root canal and crown (or restoration) done to save the tooth, but with the fracture, it complicates things. The vet put a call in to the vet dentist at OVC (Ontario Veterinary College) to see what the prognosis would be for endodontic treatment on a tooth with a slab fracture, but I probably won't hear back until tomorrow at the earliest.

I feel so sick inside and completely helpless even though I'm a dentist, and BF is an endodontist (root canal specialist). Henry got a shot of metacam at the vet's, and is on an antibiotic prophylactically so that he won't get an infection in the tooth while we wait to hear back.

    ************************************************** ***********

    He broke a tooth!!!!

It's his upper right molar... the first pointy tip is gone, and there's a fracture line extending to the gum, and there's pulp exposure.

I'm not sure what did it, whether it was the marrow bone he had two days ago, or his nylabone. I noticed just now that he was holding his nylabone and trying to chew it, but very gingerly.

We have a vet appt at 3pm.

It makes me sick inside because I don't know when this happened, and how long he's been uncomfortable.

Ugh, can you spare a few good thoughts for Hen?

Best wishes, Henry!! Hope you feel better soon!!!

K-State's CollVetMed noticed that Puff had a cracked tooth so she went under general anesthesia and I think they glued it together.

I suspect Puff cracked hers from gnawing on a hard bone.

Of course! Good thoughts for Henery! Libby broke a tooth last year. Had to have it removed, but I came home to one side of her face swollen twice it's size. I'm glad you discovered his before it became infected.
