    DefaultThe decision has been made...

Remy is getting neutered. After several discussions between hubby and I followed by the recommendation of his breeder I have made the appointment. It's on Monday.

    Dun Dun DUN!!

So, though this has been posted 1,000 times before...what can I expect post surgery?

How long does it take to heal? Will he need medication? Is he going to have to wear the "cone of despair"?

Bear was good to go the next day, but of course you have to restrict their activity for a week or so. I think they gave us some pain meds, but we did not use them because he never made a peep. He did not wear a cone, and I remember having to tell him to leave it only a couple of times.

Souldn't be necessary. For a male this is considered a minor proceedure and they heal real quick. I think about a week and the stitches come out. They may give you a antibiotic to be safe.

Good decision, Miss! Frankie was really groggy for about a day (that night and the morning after) and he had explosive diarrhea for about 3 days (from the anesthesia). He tried to lick the site, the first time I saw him do it I gave him a "LEAVE IT!", and amazingly enough he didn't touch it again. We didn't even need to use the cone.

Potential for crying the first night home, primarily a reaction from the anesthesia. After that, I have seen half the dogs forget anything happened and its history. The other half had this compulsion to try to lick or nibble at the stitches. Half is half of about 8 males that I have been around post neutering over the years.

Champ came out of the vet's like nothing had ever happened. :whatever: He was hard to keep quiet for a week because of that. He never licked at the incision so never needed the cone of despair.
