Since moving back to the States in July, I've been meaning to do another Toby and Chamois out of Sculpey (like the wedding cake topper that started it all, the Libyan version, the Christmas version, and the various ornaments I've done for other people to raise funds for STLRR). I discovered the modelling clay and my supplies had gone in the sea shipment, so I decided to wait until it arrived (not until October) and then you know how things get busy... Well, Di (Sammi's mom, "dipete") commissioned an ornament recently, and then I discovered that the time, heat, etc. in the shipping container ruined ALL my clay! So I finally went to the art store to re-stock, and I made the Sammi ornament (which will be mailed this week).
Then I went a little nuts. I hope you don't mind me sharing. As many of you know, both my husband and I are petroleum geoscientists. Since leaving Libya and the company we worked for there, we've both gotten back to working in deep water, though we now work for different companies. We're both very happy in our new jobs (and in fact, our companies will be partnering on a big deep water project next year), so I decided to run with the oil rig, deep water drilling theme and instead of being just Toby and Chamois, I'd include all 4 of our cats as well...
The Doghouse Drilling rig and crew of PETroleum:
Toby and Chamois in their company hard hats:
Almond (orange tabby cat) as helicopter ground crew:
Macy (Siamese cat) as a roustabout:
Misha (grey kitty) as derrickman:
Sherman (Maine Coon) as crane-operator:
Everything is made of Scupley modelling clay, the entire thing is about 10" tall to the top of the flag on the derrick, and the deck of the rig is about 6.5" (the quarter in the pictures is just for scale). Total work time over three days was probably 12 hours. This was a really fun project, but I suspect it's time for me to go back to work! Though I have another idea for a Texas theme next...
