i am a 40 year old single woman with an 8 year old black lab street mutt. our best guess is she has some grey hound in her legs and underbelly, her tail? i have no idea. it's as curly as they come and it rarely stops wagging. she was left in a cardboard box on a street corner all covered with sores, urine and feces and 6 or 7 of her siblings. my ex pulled her out of a pocket and said "honey i brought something home, if you don't like i'll take it back next week" i was not a dog person and knew nothing about caring for one which i knew i would end up doing. the vet said she was 4-5 weeks old. i took a week off. then started taking her to work. i'm a therapist, the head shrinking variety so i have a flexible schedule. we named her tara after the chinese goddess of healing and compassion. she certainly needed it after the tremendous abuse she had survived in her short life. in 2004 i broke my ankle and had to send her to my parents (and her boyfriend buddy a golden lab. they got married according to my nephew) i called her everynite, my mom would hold the phone to her ear and she would go running/sliding on the linoleum into the door looking for me. my fears that she would forget me were disproved even after 17 months.
now my baby is home and i cant imagine life without her. i have opened a private practice with my best friend so she goes to work with me everyday. the work she does with my clients is amazing. adults as well as teens and adults. so she is my therapy dog as well as guard dog when i work alone. my partner has a sheltie she brings in at times too. my business partner says that tara is the sweetest gentlest dog you could ever meet but if someone tried to hurt me they would be 15 minutes and ready for the barbeque grill.
well, it is late and so i ramble. tara is waiting for me to turn off the lights and give her her final beggin strip so she can go to sleep and let her guard down.
