DefaultAn Introduction & More: Tom and Jake, the Chocolate Lab

I am new to the list and live in Newton, NC. I am 65 years old and decided that, if I was going to have another lab buddy it had better be now. That way, this Lab will be my last dog.

My new buddy is Jake, the Chocolate lab. I got him from Brian Phelps (www.barefootlabs.com <http://www.barefootlabs.com/> ). He was born on July 30, 2007. Today at the vet, he weighted 45 lbs. He has gained half a pound per day over the last month. The vet believes he will be a 90+ lb dog.

We began socializing the pups (the litter of seven) about the time their eyes opened. We visited the breeder twice a week until it was time to choose a pup. We had second choice out of the five (5) males. In the end, it was Jake that chose us.

    Why am I here?

I want to do this right. My children have children and it is just me, the wife, and Jake. I educated my last lab (he died about 6 years ago at the age of 14) until we communicated effectively. He, Max, would do whatever I asked of him and he was a perfect gentlemen.

Although Jake is just a pup, he and I are working on the AKC Canine Good Citizen requirements. I plan to continue his education for at least two years and beyond.

I have questions about feeding - how much and how often.

I have questions about socialization. We meet lots of folks but few animals up to this point. That should change once we join the Catawba valley Obedience Club.

Anyway, that's more than enough for now.

    Regards,

    Tw

Welcome to the board, sounds like you'll fit right in!!

There are different sub-forums where you can post about more detailed information. For example, your question about feeding could go in "health and nutrition", any questions you have about training could go in "training tips and puppy advice".

Welcome again to you and Jake!

Congrats on the new puppy! We love chocolate too!

Sounds like that is going to be one lucky puppy having you and your wife as owners. I love hearing people so interested in training their dogs right from the get go....sounds like you really get it! Here's to all the joy Jake will bring your family!

Welcome from chicago. You'll love this forum, there's a lot of help/information here. I have a 9 month old lab and we're working towards our Canine Good Citizen Cert. too. After that, I'm interested in Rally. One step at a time. Good luck.
