    Hey, all!

I've been lurking a little over the last month or so. I'm a first-time lab owner (thought I've owned several mutts and a Golden Retriever before).

Thought I'd get a little more insight into the world of Labs and officially participate from time to time.

Beck is an 11 month old black lab who came to live with us from a breeder in LosAlamos, NM. He has some quirks, including severe separation anxiety and is uncommonly lazy for a lab (from what I understand). Working through these issues and getting some obedience training under our belts, currently.

Welcome! Hmmmm, a lazy lab, I have never heard of one, lol! I do have a lab/border collie mix that suffers from separation anxiety, among other issues, she is now 6 and it is better than it was when she was younger. How long have you had Beck?

Welcome to the forum. What have you learned about separation anxiety. Does it have any connections to when he left his momma. Have you checked any of that?

I've only had Beck for two months. Prior to him coming to our house he lived with no fewer than 5 labs (breeder is also a service dog trainer) and was never alone. The separation anxiety is expected but it's tough to deal with.

He hates being left in his crate and convincing him to even enter it has become a struggle. I offer high value treats and a special rug that he loves while in the crate and he whines, yips and has a high-pitched bark that he throws out the whole time.

I've tried increasing the amount of time he's in the crate gradually, making sure he's really tired before leaving, introducing music or white noise and even got a Thundershirt to help him. Nothing seems to be helping. He was neutered last week so he can start going to doggy daycare a few days a week, I'm hopeful that might help. He's also suffering from some insecurity/shyness around new people so we've also been going to the dog park a few times a week.

Emma has been with me since she was about 6 weeks old, I am not sure where all her quirks come from. Leaving mom too early I am sure had something to do with a few of her issues. It sounds like Beck was just used to being with other dogs and that is probably much different. 2 months is a short time, I have no doubt with patience and a lot of love he will turn out just fine.
