We are Julie & Franki and we are the proud owners of Chuewy, our lab. I, Franki, am a disabled veteran. I served in the Army from 2002-2004. I was deployed to Iraq in 2003 and was injured while performing my duties as a Chemical Operations Specialist/Heavy Decon. After I was honorably discharged from the Army due to my back injury and PTSD, my therapist suggested I get a therapy dog. I went to an adoption shelter in Oregon and found my Chuewy! He has been my rock for over 6 yrs now. He was diagnosed with bone cancer just 2 1/2 weeks ago. He needs his right hind leg amputated ASAP. He started having trouble with his knees about a year ago. The vet did initial xrays and said he had bad knees and they could possibly "blow out" one day. He's a very active dog and loves to play. As time went on, he started limping and not bearing weight on his right hind leg. The vet then stated he needed a TPLO surgery to correct it. The surgery being over $1,800, and I being a disabled veteran, could not afford that. He has been on pain medication for over a year now. Well that knee has slowly been swelling and we've tried increasing his arthritis meds and pain meds and even given him lasix, which pulls fluid from the area. Friday, 4-29-11, we took him back to the vet and she diagnosed him with bone cancer. My heart shattered!!! As I said, I'm a disabled veteran. I served in the Army from 2002-2004. He is my service dog... and to find this out, has devistated me. I'm here to ask for help from whoever can help. I know times are hard right now, on everyone. But I cannot afford this surgery by myself on my fixed income. The surgery is estimated at $600 and that's not including aftercare. The cancer has NOT spread to other areas of his body. Xrays confirmed that. If there is a chance that this amputation would rid him of ALL cancer, then that's what he needs. The vet is pretty positive he will come thru with flying colors and live a happy life...I'm asking please, please help me save my best friend. I love him more than life. If any of you want to call our vet and verify any of this I've explained, FEEL FREE. We also have his story on a chip in site. I'll put all of this info at the bottom of this post...
This news has changed our lives forever. It has literally broken our hearts. He is such a sweetheart. He is a Gentle Giant. Everyone he sees, he loves and everyone that meets him, falls in love with him too. If you can't help, we understand. Just please pray for him. Thank yall so much, from the bottom of our hearts

Guess I said too much in our opening introduction....Sorry everyone, but that IS our story. This is new to us and we are scared to death. Just looking for some help is all. Thanks for taking the time to read our story.....Sorry if we have offended anyone or said something wrong.

First: Thank you for your service to our country!!
Second: I hope you find the support you need for your dog. Very sad story.
I lost a cat a few years ago to an osteosarcoma. Different situation, but we made the decision to keep her as happy for as long as we could, then gracefully helped her cross over.
It's a tough life.....but someone has to do it.
