I have a seven month old chocolate lab and would like to train her to track blood. Does it matter what kind of blood I use. I was going to use beef blood and at the end of the trail line award with a deer leg.
I'm a newbie and any advise would be a great help.
As I understand it, using beef blood to track deer might be slightly confusing. You can, I believe, buy blood for tracking, you can even buy scents of different animals to train your dog to track. I've done some working trials tracking, you train the dog to follow the scent and the actual trail, so all the disturbed foliage, soil etc as well. If I were you, I'd try and find a training club so you can learn about how scent works, how dogs pick it up, and the difference, Labs are ground scenters so do get their nose down very well. You'll also learn how to work a tracking harness, and (if necessary) line, it's quite a skill. Deer tracking in itself is a sport as I'm sure you know, I believe it's very popular across the channel from me in Northern Europe.
Good luck, I hope you can find a training class, or someone online that can give you more specifics.
