    DefaultNeed some beginners help

Welp, title pretty much explains it. I would like to train Bear as a gundog. I need a good reference to start from, be it a book, website, ect. He loves to fetch, he's pretty good with the basic commands I've taught him, and I'm going to get him into basic obedience classes soon just to reinforce the basics and hopefully pick up a thing or two. Anyone have any advice on what to buy/where to look? All the trainers near me want an ungodly amount of money, and are a couple hours away from me. I don't want to ship him off for a few months, I mean, what kind of dad would I be if I did that? Lol. I want it to be a fun experience for the both of us. Any help is appreciated!

We like the Evan Graham DVD series. Good luck. It's lots of fun. I would also recommend finding an HRC club near you.

For puppies I like Sound Beginnings by Jackie Merton and Bill Hillman's Training Your Retriever Puppy.

Once you start doing formal training either Evan Graham's Smartworks or Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training are the most common programs folks use.

Wacky, are those programs relatively forgiving for new pups and nee trainers? I've never trained a hunting pup before.

What kind of a gundog? A non-slip retriever or an upland dog? If it will only be retrieving......your training should be different than if the dog is questing for birds........
