    DefaultBolo Mark

I've been trying to find out more information on Bolo Marks...

I was wondering what your thoughts and views were on Bolo Marks? Do blacks get them more than chocolates?

Is the white spot on the chest considered a Bolo Mark or is it just under the feet? Can it be elsewhere on the body? The labrador standard states that a small white spot on the chest is "permissible but not desirable" how small is "small"...

Some say the Bolo Mark can be linked with exceptional coat; what are your experiences with that?

I know I've asked a lot of questions in just a few lines... I'll leave it at that for now and see what happens :-)

"Bolo marks" refer specifically to those white spots found on their feet right behind their metacarpal/metatarsal pads (mostly referring to metacarpal, or front feet in any color), according to my sources. They are termed "Bolo marks," named after English Dual Ch. Banchory Bolo because he produced these, historically, in a number of his offspring.

Is the white spot on the chest also considered a Bolo Mark?

Nope. Not that I know of. Just the feet.

Agreed, it just refers to the feet.

I believe Mary Roslin Williams said in one of her books that Bolo marks are usually accompanied by great coats.

That's an extreme case on that chocolate. Clint produces a lot of blacks with Bolo marks - they are white patches clearly visible when you roll the puppy over - right at the base of the "heel" behind the large palm pad. They are very white from birth to about 6 weeks and then begin to fade and by 8 - 10 weeks they are gone. He also produces a heavy coat. I had one puppy in my last litter (not related to Clint) who had Bolo marks and interestingly he had a very different coat from the his 7 black littermates - his was softer and more "plush" and took on a dull appearance at 8 weeks or so. He now as an adult has the best coat in the litter by far that I have seen.

I have a few pups that appear to have white behind their pad. Is it also considered a bolo mark when it's in the fur in their pads? Grace has that, and it seems the pups that have the white on their feet have it in both places. It will be interesting to see as they get bigger.
