DefaultQuestion on what my Lab is mixed with.

I bought a Black Lab last month. He looks just like a Lab except he has a longer coat then a normal Lab would. He acts like a Lab and is just as smart as every Lab I have known.
Here are some pictures of Jake.

Did you get him from a shelter? He looks much like my Axel did as a puppy. Yes the hair is a little longer but that will change as he gets older.

No he isn't a shelter dog,Last shelter dog I got was very sick so I won't do that again. I hate the idea of buying from someone and would rather of had a shelter dog,but the last one cost me a lot of money and then had to be put down. Was a hard choice to make doing that, but he was to sick and getting worse. I have looked for 2 years looking at several different dogs and Jake picked us out.He would not leave us alone when me and my girlfriend went to look to see if the litter had one we liked.
I'm not disappointed in which one picked us.He is pretty darn smart. He is almost 3 months old and already knows the sit, shake, stay command knows when I grab a leash it's time to walk, goes to the backdoor and lays there when he needs to go out,or will circle whoever is sitting at the computer telling them he wants outside. Also drinks what seems to be a gallon of water a day.

He acts like one also LOL I have a Rat Terrier and they get all wound up playing together. I got him at 8 weeks so I have had him about a month and he has settled well with us. He goes in 4 days for his last of the 5 in 1 shots and a rabies shot and more heartworm pill. He doesn't have it but trying to avoid it.I don't want anything happening to him if I can help it.

Is he AKC registered? If so, he's probably purebred. Did you see the parents?

No AKC Papers. To some it may make a difference but to me it doesn't.I did see a picture of mom.The person who sold them was selling them for a farmer she does work for.She works with horses and used to be a K-9 Law Enforcement Officer. I am not hung up on him being 100% Lab,if he has a little of another breed I'm ok with it.He looks more like a Lab then anything and the only thing that throws me off is the long coat. But reading more into it,it's not uncommon for some Labs to have a gene that causes this. So far I have had no health issues with my Lab and he is always ready to play. I have noticed that he doesn't eat every bit of food offered to him like my last lab did.He will eat and leave some.He isn't full grown so I am sure he will get to that phase sooner or later.
My Rat Terror has finally came around and plays with Jake. He growls at him and will wag his little nub,put his front paws down and jump around Jake, and Jake does the same to him.He can get Jake barking all crazy.I will have to get a video of how they play. My Rat Terror is the bigger breed one and weigh 25 lbs.

His hair is not long enough to have the "long coat gene". Hopefully your pup has a long uneventful life, but know that buying from the type of "breeder" as you did is almost riskier health-wise than a shelter dog. You avoided a shelter due to problems you had with your old dog, and you may have jumped into the same pot with this new dog. Crossed fingers though. If you want to have a healthy puppy/healthy dog, buy from a reputable breeder. The upfront cost is more, but the cost of vet care over the life of the dog is minimal....because the dogs end up being healthier.

He looks like a Lab to me.

While one does need to be careful in choosing pups and should choose from a reputable breeder, the testing for health issues does not provide a 100% protection from severe illness or other health issues. We followed that rule and chose a Lab nine years ago who developed an Acanthomatous epulis requiring surgery; and have a 21 month old from another reputable breeder who has mild HD in one hip and moderate in another.

That is not to say that you shouldn't get from a reputable breeder who does health clearances, but - without a sideline pedigree where all siblings and off spring are followed through out their lifetime - but doing everything the "right" way can STILL result in dogs with illnesses and issues.

Enjoy your boy, feed him right, play with him correctly, train him well and here's to a long, happy, illness free life for him!
