I took Baxter to our first "real " conformation show this weeked - went to the WC test on Thursday just to see how they do it, stayed in a hotel Thursday and Friday (he LOVED being able to hang out on the bed), and were entered in 2 shows Friday and 2 on Saturday - Puppy Dog 9-12 months in Sweeps and Regular Class. First 3 shows were pretty dreadful - he was awful before we went into the ring, and finally, in the first class today, was so fed up with me that he sat down in the ring and wouldn't budge - I practically had to drag him out of the ring - fairly embarassing - also got chastised by a very well known breeder for talking to him too much in the ring and uspsetting the other dogs. Then, in our second show today, my goal was to just get him to stand when he was supposed to and gait well. He did much better, and I was much quieter in the ring. And then the judge lines up the first 3 dogs, and then - what's that? Is he pointing to US? Is he pointing for US to get in line next? Why yes he is! Fourth place out of 10 dogs - maybe I will keep the big stinker. I was also grateful for a few very nice people who had come up to me before and said that they thought he was a very nice dog, and gave me some tips on handling him. They also said that boy puppies can be tough, and that I probably need to be a little more firm with him. Hmmmmm - seems like I've heard that before...
Congrats! (and don't you hate well-known breeders giving you a piece of their mind...I just want to scream.."hey I'm new at this, give me a break' ...on the other hand some have been extremely friendly and helpful).
I think she was trying to be nice, because she seems to be basically a nice woman, but I think she was annoyed at me because I was upsetting her dog.
